     The purpose of this book is to serve as a text for the undergraduate students, readers of history, and Tourist of Chennai City.  This book covers the History of Chennai through the Ages with till date information.  This book made an attempt to describe how do the fisher hamlet become Corporation of Chennai City, the fourth Largest City in India, the Peace City, Secular City with ethnical cultural centre, Gate way of South India, Industrial City, and International Trade Centre and so on. It also covers the legacy of British as an individual person and as a whole left to this city as well as Tamil Nadu State.  Limitation of this attempt is unable to cover the entire history of the city but I have endeavored my best to provide a comprehensive picture of history of Chennai in the right historical perspective in the single book in a simple and lucid style in simple and easy regional language to cater the need of the reader to know about the development of Chennai and capital city of Tamil Nadu.
There are Nine Chapters in this book with 92 subtitles. First chapter entitled as “Government Administrative Departments” deals about the origin and development of some of the Government Administrative Offices like Ft. St. George, Madras High court, Chennai Corporation, Regional Meteorological Centre, Guindy Lodge – Raj Bhavan, Bounquette Hall – Rajaji Hall, and Bank of Madras.
Second chapter explaining about the “Pilgrimage Centres” of Chennai with subtitled of Christian churches, Hindu Temples, Mosque, and Parsee temple.
Third Chapter explain about the “Recreational Centers of Chennai” like Marina Beach, Madras Zoological Park, Cinema Theatres, the Anjelis Hotel, Victoria Memorial Hall, Valluvar Kottam, Chetpet Part and fishing pool, Oomanthurar Government Garden.
Fourth Chapter “Educational Institutions” describes about 17 premier educational institutions in Chennai.  This chapter focused on the incidents cause for the origin and development of various types of educational institutions like general educational institutions, Medical Colleges and Fine Arts College and Institute of Film Technology and so on.








Fifth Chapter “Historical Research Centres Central Libraries and Cultural Centre” focused on Historical Research Centers like Museum and Achieves, Central Libraries, and Cultural Centers in Chennai under 11 subtitles.
Sixth chapter entitled “Transport and Communication”, which describe the origin of road ways – road transport and railways; waterways, airways and telephone & telegraphic services in Chennai City right from its inception to till date.
Seventh chapter titled as “Development of Industries and Trade Centres” “in Chennai City through the ages.  It covers the history of Binny Mil, PRR and sons, Integral coach Factory, MRL, MFL, Tetroid of India, Trade centres like Higginsbhodams, Parry Dare House, Spenzer Plaza, Moore Market, Khaleeli Manson and so on.
Eighth chapter “Palaces and Graveyard” is covered with the history of Arcot Nawab resident viz.  Chepauk palace, Amir Mahal the only palace now in Tamil Nadu as well as it cover the historical evidence or sources of history i.e. Palaverkadu Dutch Cemetery, St. Mary’s Cemetery, St. Roque’s  Cemetery help us to know about the trade conduct with east and western countries.
Ninth chapter “Chennai – Name of the Places and Reason” explain the origin and development of Chennai City with the reason for the areas’ names with historic incidents and its value in writing the history of Chennai in specific and general in Tamil Nadu History.
Appendix helps the readers to know the year and incident in the history of Chennai through the ages.  Finally glossary to know the words used in writing the History of Chennai and some personalities left legacy in the city of Chennai.
